In a rage, he tried to fight his way free, but he was unmatched. That didn’t mean he gave up easily. He struggled against them, cursing up a storm, his expression full of fury and his eyes wild.

Her repeated screams of, “Let him go!” went ignored as Taint directed the two prospects to take him out back with a jerk of his chin.

Oh fuck!

She cried out when her injured ankle rolled in her rush to chase after them. She ended up limping as fast as she could since every step she took with her right foot would cause a sharp pain to spiral up her leg.

She sucked in a sharp breath to push past it, decided to kick off her shoes hoping that would help, and did her best to catch up as they disappeared down the back hallway.

She needed to be a witness so Taint and his goons didn’t hurt or kill Rez.

“You’re removing the wrong guy!” she screamed down the hallway as she hobbled along. “You should have been doing something about that damn drunk!”

Nobody was freaking listening to her!

She pushed past the pain and kept going. Some of the women came out of the dressing room to watch as Taint kicked open the back door, so they could continue to drag Rez outside.

Effectively ejecting him from the club.

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

She caught the door before it slammed shut and stepped out into the employee parking lot with her bare feet into the freezing cold weather.

“Don’t you dare hurt him!” she screamed, watching Rez continue to fight to pull free.

“Get back to work!” Taint yelled over his shoulder.

“Get your fucking hands off me,” Rez kept shouting.

It hit Sapphire then that Rez had not once identified himself as a cop. Because if he had, they might have stopped.

Or maybe they wouldn’t. Maybe they’d hurt him more. These bikers had no love for law enforcement. And if it was uncovered who he was, they might take the opportunity to hurt him worse.

“Whataya gonna do? One of you, three of us, asshole,” Taint barked in Rez’s face. He jabbed a finger in his direction. “You’re banned from this fuckin’ club. You come back here again, your ass is gonna get drug outta here every damn time. You’re done workin’ at our church, too. Get the shit you need to get high elsewhere. Never wanna see your mug around here again. You got me?”

“Fuck you, motherfuckers,” Rez shouted as all three shoved him at once when releasing him. The momentum caused him to stumble and land on his knees on the hard, cold pavement.

She moved as quickly as she could with her bum ankle to go check on him as Taint and the two prospects marched past her back inside. She’d deal with the asshole club manager later. Right now, she had someone else more important to deal with first.

Her teeth began to chatter and she shivered violently as her adrenaline began to wane. A reminder she was barefoot and only dressed in her fake leather bikini.

January was certainly not a time to be outside in Pennsylvania dressed as if she should be on a tropical beach.

By the time she reached him, Rez was on his feet, using the back of his hand to wipe the blood off his mouth. His chest was still pumping rapidly and his jaw popping.

He spun on her, growling, “You’re leaving! You’re getting another fucking job.” He stabbed a finger toward the building. “What happened in there is bullshit and that motherfucker did nothing to stop it. This place isn’t safe for you.”

“I’m sorry?” He was turning his anger on her? No.

He took a step toward her. “You heard me. Let’s go.”

When he reached for her, she stepped back. “No, Rez, you go and cool down. I’m not leaving.”

“You’re out here freezing your ass off and you’re hurt.”

“I’ll be fine and I’ll go back inside. Go home and get out of here before you get me fired.”

“Fuck that, Phire. I’m not leaving without you.”

Her spine snapped straight and she raised her chin to meet his fiery gaze. “It’s not up to you to make that decision.”

She couldn’t walk away from her job, not without a safety net, but she could walk away from him.

“Sapphire!” he shouted, as she did just that. Her name dripped with anger and frustration. “They’re not going to protect you from assholes like that.”

She not only needed to save her job, but she needed to save him, too, from both the Demons and himself. And to do that, she needed him to leave and go cool off. “Go home, Rez! This isn’t your problem.”

“Bullshit!”

The second she got to the rear employee door, she punched in the security code and the door clicked open. She hobbled inside as fast as she could, making sure the door was closed and locked so he couldn’t follow her.
