“Damn!”

“Holy shit!”

“What the fuck!”

“Kick his fucking ass!”

All of the shouts behind him barely penetrated his skull.

Saint’s arms were up in an attempt to protect his face, but Sapphire was on a tear, striking him over and over with the five-inch heel.

Even on the screen, they could see him bleeding.

When he covered his head with his arms, she went for his ear, pounding it over and over with the heel of her shoe.

Then she took a step back and slammed her bare foot into his gut, knocking him off balance. Before he could catch himself, she kicked him again, fast enough so he didn’t have the opportunity to grab her leg and throw her to the ground.

As he was getting back up, she searched the floor until she spotted his gun, rushed over to pick it up, spun around and pointed it at him.

Jesus! Do you even know how to handle a fucking gun? screamed through his head. Her holding it scared him as much as when Saint was holding it.

Why wasn’t she getting the hell out of there when she had the chance instead of going head to head with a biker who’d kill her without a second thought?

Her mouth was moving a mile a minute as she approached him again. She flipped the gun around in her hand until she was holding the barrel and began to beat him with the grip.

With her chest heaving and her eyes wild, her arm continued to lift and fall.

She did not stop, she did not slow. Not until Saint was sprawled on the floor, no longer moving and unable to protect himself.

His face nothing but a bloody pulp.

Then she stuck the business end of the gun into the man’s gaping mouth.

Again, the air crackled and popped around him as they waited for her to pull the trigger.

Thank fuck she didn’t.

Instead, she inhaled a breath so big they could see it on the screen. She then shook her head, slipped the gun from his mouth and straightened.

She stared down at him for a few pounding heartbeats and said one last thing before kicking off her other shoe, taking the gun and walking barefoot, more calmly than she should, out of the office.

“Like I said, total fucking badass.”

Rez blinked.

He turned to stare at Rodgers. The man shrugged. “I just wanted you to see what happened. You should go check on her. She might have just killed a man.”

Rodgers said that with the same unconcerned inflection as if he was informing Rez that Sapphire just dropped her damn ice cream cone.

The difference was, she would not end up in prison for wasting food.

A self-defense excuse only went so far. In this case, she could only defend herself, or even Cherish, to the point where they were able to retreat.

And here Rodgers was calling her a badass.

A fucking badass!

Taking a risk that might have ended badly was not being a badass.

It was reckless.

Dangerous.

Heart stopping.

A hand clamped on his shoulder. Ready to shrug it off, he glanced back to see who it was.

Crew.

He expected the task force leader to make a smart ass comment, or for him to crow about being impressed with Sapphire’s actions. Instead, the man’s expression was grim. As was everyone else’s who’d come upstairs. “Go find her. Now. Sloane and Decker will understand why you left. I’ll tell them what happened.”

Rez pointed toward the monitor. “Lose that footage.”

“Rez…”

“You did it for Mel, now do it for Sapphire.”

It took Crew a few seconds, but he finally nodded.

“If that motherfucker’s still breathing, we’re going to handle this our way. Just like with T-Bone,” was the last thing he growled as he pushed past Crew, Finn, Rodgers and Jamison, heading toward the door.

For the first time since hooking up with her, he was grateful the woman lived in Rockvale.

That meant he could be at her front door within minutes.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

“Shit,” she muttered when a pounding was heard at her door.

She didn’t need to guess who it was, she knew.

She didn’t want to answer. She didn’t want him to see her like she was right now.

She didn’t even know why he was at her door since she’d been scheduled to work until closing. How did he know she was home? Was he having someone watch her? Was he watching her?

She winced when the pounding continued. He was going to piss off her neighbors and if they complained, she could get evicted. It was bad enough she just lost her damn job. If she lost her home, too…?

With a sigh, she peered through the peephole to confirm she was correct. That drew another, much more loud and dramatic, sigh from her. “Go away, Rez!”

“Open the fucking door, Sapphire!”

“The neighbors are going to call the cops!”

“Then open the fucking door! And maybe you’ve forgotten, but I am a fucking cop!”
