“Impertinent little honey bun,” he growls against the top of my head then suddenly tickles me until I beg him for mercy.
“I’ll be good,” I tell him, knowing I plan no such thing. If I cross my fingers behind my back, does my promise count?
“I’ll believe that when I see it.” He already knows me.
A few minutes later, all the excitement catches up with me and my eyes drift shut. Right before I fall asleep, a thought cuts through the fog pulling me under. Shoot. I forgot to call Fischer. Oops.
My eyes pop open to loud banging echoing through the entire house. I notice the sunlight peeking in the blinds and realize I slept all night without moving. “What the fuck?” Miles jumps out of bed, and I forget about all the noise as I stare at his muscular, naked body. He pulls on a pair of gray sweatpants and rushes to the door before turning to order me, “Stay here.”
Oh no. He’s going to learn really fast that I hate being ordered around. I throw on his red Falcons t-shirt and rush out right after him.
I hustle down the long hallway and come to a sudden stop when I see Miles fly across the foyer and crash into a beautiful antique table. I quickly take in the scene and realize my brother just punched my boyfriend in the face. “Motherfucker.” My brother kneels down and wraps his hands around Miles’ neck. When he rears back to punch him again, I act fast to put a halt to this madness.
“Stop!” I screech, but the incensed men are too engrossed in their brawl to pay attention to me, so I move on to my next trick.
My loud, piercing whistle fills the foyer before Fischer turns to me. “Goddamn. My fucking eardrums are probably bleeding.”
“What are you doing?” I ignore him and rush over to check on Miles. “Are you okay?”
“That hardheaded motherfucker is just fine. For now.” My brother hasn’t calmed down at all.
“Fischer Mackenzie, stop this right now.” Maddie comes flying through the front door.
“The more the merrier,” Miles grumbles under his breath before hopping to his feet. When he turns to me and smiles, I notice the dark puffy skin under his left eye and wince. “Your brother would like a word with you, honey bun.” He glances over his shoulder toward Fischer. “And he doesn’t know how to ask nicely.”
“I’ll show you nicely,” Fischer growls and steps toward us, but Maddie steps in his path and digs her finger into his chest.
“Stop acting like a caveman.”
“You like my caveman ways.” My brother wiggles his eyebrows, causing me to make gagging noises.
“Please feel free to take your wife home and act like a caveman all you want.” Just when things are calming down, Miles decides to tick my brother off.
“Fucker.” Yep. That did it. “I’m going to kick your ass.” Fischer picks up Maddie and sets her down beside him before turning to us. “For daring to touch my sister.”
“Oh, no, you aren’t.” I step between the two men, needing to get a handle on this before they pound each other. “I’m a big girl, and I can freaking take care of myself.” I glare at my brother. “Why did you hit Miles?”
“Why?” My brother throws his hands up in the air. “I find you having a sleepover at his house, and you wonder why I’m pissed?”
Mr. Male Chauvinist Pig isn’t getting away with this. “That’s right.” I give him a little shove. He doesn’t move an inch, but it makes me feel better. “You have no reason to be mad at Miles or me. I’m an adult. A-D-U-L-T.”
“I know that.” My brother suddenly looks like a little kid. “But, but…”
“But nothing.” I’m on a roll. “You are going to go home with your wife and I’ll call you tomorrow. Once I decide I’m ready to speak to you.”
“This isn’t over,” he calls to Miles. “You hurt my sister and they won’t ever find your body.”
“You and I need to have a long talk.” I turn shocked eyes toward Miles as he continues, “And get everything out in the open.”
“I’m ready when you are.” I have no idea what I’m going to do with these two.
“Follow me.” Miles points to the large French doors that lead to his patio. “We can discuss this while the little ladies cook us breakfast.”
My brother’s eyes fill with laughter as his shoulders shake. “You are one brave motherfucker to say that to them.” He points to me and Maddie. “That kinda shit will get your ass kicked in this family.”
“Maybe you can give me some advice on handling Mackenzie women.” Huh? How did it go from these two cavemen being mortal enemies to them giving each other advice?
“You won’t ever understand them,” Maddie steps close and whispers in my ear. “Don’t even waste the brainpower trying to figure it out.”
