“That’s more than ok.” I answered. “Thanks, James. I’m looking forward to it.”
“So are we. Welcome to Stonewall.”
I hung up. Maddox cocked his head, arms crossed. His smile grew. “Was that what I think it was?”
“I got the job,” I said.
Maddox opened his arms and pulled me into a tight hug. I closed my eyes and rested my head on his chest, feeling at home. “I knew you’d get it,” Madds said, kissing me.
“Thank you. I don’t think I even would have applied without you encouraging me.”
“I have a feeling you would have still applied somehow.”
“I don’t know,” I said. “You’re the cause of a lot of good things in my life.”
We step into the kitchen. We set the empty glasses on the marble countertop. The curtain-less window is open, allowing a salty draft to be carried in. I smiled as Maddox leaned forward. Our smiles met, lips pressed together again in a curving kiss. I put a hand on his chest. His heart-beat filled me with a sense of calm I couldn’t quite compare to anything else.
“You’re the best.” I spoke my words against his lips. His hands came to settle at the small of my back, underneath my shirt. His thumb drew soft circles against my skin.
“I love you,” he said. “With every ice-filled fiber of my being. I’m so fucking happy life brought us together the way it did.”
“I am, too,” I echo. His heart begins to quicken, the beats coming a little faster. “There were so many ways we could have been kept apart. If I didn’t take the case, if I didn’t come looking for you, if you hadn’t pushed to start working with me. So many different ways we could have gone. I’m so glad it was this road we took. You’re my eternal sunshine.”
He kissed me again, and again, and again, until we completely forgot about the refills. Maddox picked me up in his strong arms and carried me all the way to his bedroom, where we spent the rest of the day together.
